How the Wegovy Pill Works for Weight Loss

The Wegovy pill is a once-daily oral form of semaglutide, approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to reduce excess body weight and maintain weight reduction long term.¹ It contains the same active ingredient as the weekly Wegovy injection. In OASIS 4, which enrolled 307 adults without diabetes, the oral semaglutide group had an estimated mean body-weight change of −13.6% at week 64, compared with −2.2% with placebo.² Those are group averages from a controlled trial. Your physician still has to decide whether the label, your medications, and your health history make the tablet a fit.

Wegovy Pill Approval and Label Uses

Novo Nordisk announced the Wegovy pill approval on December 22, 2025. The company described it as the first oral glucagon-like peptide-1 medicine approved for obesity in the United States at that time.³

Semaglutide is a glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) medicine that acts through the GLP-1 pathway. The tablet and weekly injection use the same active ingredient through different routes.

The tablet label lists two adult uses alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity:

• Reducing excess body weight and maintaining weight reduction long term in adults with obesity, or adults with overweight and at least one weight-related condition.
• Reducing the risk of major adverse cardiovascular events in adults with established cardiovascular disease and obesity or overweight. These events include cardiovascular death, nonfatal heart attack, and nonfatal stroke.¹

Weight gain can reflect a wider pattern involving insulin, thyroid function, sex hormones, sleep, and stress. A weight evaluation can examine those drivers before and alongside a prescription.

OASIS 4 Wegovy Pill Results

OASIS 4 found that oral semaglutide produced more average weight loss than placebo at week 64. The double-blind, randomized trial ran for 71 weeks and enrolled 307 adults without diabetes. Each participant had obesity or had overweight with at least one related complication.²

Participants received oral semaglutide or placebo once daily, along with lifestyle interventions. The estimated mean body-weight change was −13.6% with oral semaglutide and −2.2% with placebo. The estimated difference between groups was −11.4 percentage points.²

More participants taking oral semaglutide reached weight-loss thresholds of at least 5%, 10%, 15%, and 20%.² These findings answer whether the Wegovy pill can produce weight loss at the group level. They do not predict how many pounds you will lose or how quickly your weight will change.

OASIS 4 enrolled people without diabetes and was funded by Novo Nordisk.² If you have diabetes, your physician should avoid treating its average as a personal forecast. Your starting weight also changes what any percentage means in pounds.

Oral Semaglutide Administration Requirements

The Wegovy pill label sets a fixed morning routine for the tablet. It requires once-daily use on an empty stomach in the morning with plain water only, up to 4 ounces. The label also requires a wait of at least 30 minutes before food, other drinks, or other oral medications.¹

Your prescriber or pharmacist explains how the label requirements fit around breakfast, coffee, supplements, and prescription medicines. If your morning includes several oral products, the timing deserves a specific review. Your physician can determine whether the schedule works safely with the rest of your care.

The routine also affects consistency. A tablet may sound simpler than an injection, but the morning conditions can be difficult for some schedules. If those conditions do not fit your routine, your physician can discuss whether another formulation makes more sense.

A daily pill follows fixed label rules, while the wider plan still needs to fit your numbers and routine. Follow-up measurements allow your physician to adjust that plan as your response changes.

Side Effects and How Your Physician Tracks Them

OASIS 4 reported gastrointestinal adverse events in 74.0% of participants taking oral semaglutide and 42.2% taking placebo.² Your experience can differ from either group, which is why tolerance belongs in every follow-up conversation.

The Wegovy label also reports discontinuation figures from its 64-week tablet study. Study drug was stopped for any reason by 18% of participants receiving the tablet and 25.5% receiving placebo. Adverse reactions led to discontinuation in 6.8% of the tablet group and 5.9% of the placebo group.¹

The boxed warning states that semaglutide caused thyroid C-cell tumors in rodents and that the human risk is unknown. Wegovy is contraindicated if you have a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC), or if you have multiple endocrine neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN 2).¹ Your physician reviews that history before prescribing.

Oral Wegovy Compared with the Weekly Pen

The tablet and pen contain the same active ingredient, but their schedules differ. The tablet label requires daily morning administration under specific food, water, and medication conditions. Eli Lilly and Company announced that Foundayo, another oral GLP-1 medicine, was approved on April 1, 2026 (Foundayo versus Wegovy pill).⁴

Physician Review Before and After Prescribing

A Wegovy pill prescription starts with confirmation that the label fits your medical profile. Your physician weighs several concrete factors before deciding whether to prescribe it:

• Label eligibility. Your weight category, related medical conditions, and cardiovascular history determine which approved indication may apply.
• Thyroid history. A personal or family history of MTC, or MEN 2 itself, rules out Wegovy under the label.¹
• Oral medications. Your physician and pharmacist review whether the morning administration requirements can fit around your other medicines.
• Daily routine. Your ability to follow the tablet conditions consistently affects whether the oral route is practical.

In the Wegovy label’s tablet study, the tablet was escalated to its full strength over a 12-week period before maintenance.¹ Your physician sets and adjusts that escalation. You should not copy another person’s schedule or change a prescription based on an online review.
